Hospitality is about more than what guests see when they walk through the door. It is the combination of thoughtful planning, creative ideas, memorable food and beverage, intentional design and the many people working behind the scenes to bring every detail together.
That philosophy came to life at The Art in Hospitality Summer Open House, at The Heirloom at N.K. Hurst. Hosted by The Heirloom and Crystal Signature Events, the evening invited guests to experience the Downtown Indianapolis venue in a completely different way, with colorful tablescapes, interactive culinary moments, handcrafted cocktails, florals, entertainment and wellness-inspired activations throughout the space.
More than a venue showcase, the event offered a look at what is possible when an experienced event team and talented vendor partners collaborate from the earliest stages of planning.

The “Art in Hospitality” concept carried through nearly every element of the evening, beginning with the food.
Rather than relying on one traditional buffet, the Crystal culinary team transformed the menu into a series of interactive and visually creative experiences. Passed hors d’oeuvres were even presented on acrylic paint trays, reinforcing the evening’s artistic theme. Guests sampled bites including citrus dill salmon toast, heirloom tomato Parmesan crisps and heritage beets with whipped goat cheese.
One of the more playful stations featured a palette of sweet, savory and floral butters, each paired with French bread and layered with ingredients ranging from fresh berries and maple drizzle to olive tapenade, candied citrus and edible flowers. A Hurst Bean Salad was served in hanging orbs, while strawberry shortcake skewers added another colorful, handheld option.
These details showed how custom catering can go beyond simply choosing a menu. Presentation, service style and the way guests interact with the food can all become part of the event design.

The creativity continued behind the bar.
Specialty beverages were designed to complement the visual experience, including a Chambord Limoncello Spritz topped with a smoke bubble, a rose hibiscus lemonade finished with an edible flower and a playful Bubble Gum Sour served with a bubble on top.
Even the nontraditional beverage experiences played into the theme. A pressed juice bar featured colorful juices displayed in mini bottles on coordinating color swatches, introducing a wellness element while continuing the event’s focus on visual presentation.
It was a reminder that beverages do not have to be an afterthought. The right drink menu, garnish, glassware and presentation can contribute just as much to the overall look and feel of an event as the food or décor.

Throughout The Heirloom, guests encountered experiences designed to invite participation rather than simply observation.
A floral styling bar gave guests the opportunity to create their own arrangements, with florals from JP Parker Flowers and design elements coordinated throughout the activation. The setup included a floral cart, wrapping station, individual name cards and a system that allowed finished bouquets to become part of the experience from creation through pickup.
Elsewhere, guests could explore an interactive photo booth, racing simulator and wellness-focused experiences, creating multiple reasons to move through the venue and discover something new.
That variety is particularly valuable when planning events with longer guest experiences. Instead of concentrating everything into one room or one moment, strategically placed activations can encourage movement, conversation and discovery.

The evening also highlighted just how dramatically tables, linens, glassware and florals can change the personality of a space.
A Classic Party Rental supplied a mix of dusty blue, pink and sage carousel goblets; ginger and dusty blue prism plates; pearl chargers; whimsical wildflower napkins; and linens in fuchsia, rust orange, moss, sage, green ikat, Wedgewood blue and brushed watercolor patterns.
The photos especially show how those layers worked together. Bright florals, patterned linens, colorful glassware and varied table shapes created distinct visual moments while still feeling cohesive across the venue.
For couples, corporate planners and nonprofit organizations, that is an important reminder: a venue does not have to look the same from one event to the next. Thoughtful rentals and styling can completely shift the atmosphere while still allowing the character of The Heirloom to come through.

Perhaps the best demonstration of hospitality happened before the first guest arrived.
The event required coordination among numerous creative partners, with setup beginning days in advance. That behind-the-scenes coordination is one of the most important parts of event planning, even though guests rarely see it.
For an event with multiple vendors, the venue team becomes the central point connecting load-in schedules, room layouts, power needs, rentals, florals, catering, entertainment and last-minute adjustments. When those pieces are coordinated well, guests simply experience an event that feels effortless.
The Art of Hospitality brought together contributions from A Classic Party Rental, JP Parker Flowers, Markey’s, Rejoice Booth, Dallara Experience Hub, Simplicity Juice, The Yoga Lady, Bliss Event Design and Shots by Sidney, along with the Crystal Signature Events and Heirloom teams.
That kind of collaboration is why building a trusted vendor team matters. You can read more about Crystal’s approach in Vendor Coordination 101: How We Help You Build the Perfect Team.

No two events need to approach hospitality in exactly the same way.
For a wedding, it might mean a cocktail guests can watch being finished tableside, a floral station during cocktail hour or a menu inspired by the couple’s favorite places. For a corporate event, it could be an interactive culinary station, branded experience or unexpected entertainment element. For a nonprofit fundraiser, thoughtful guest engagement might help reinforce the organization’s mission and keep attendees connected throughout the evening.
The common thread is intention.
At The Heirloom at N.K. Hurst, Crystal Signature Events can bring together catering, event planning, creative partners and the flexibility of a distinctive Downtown Indianapolis venue to create an experience tailored to the people in the room.
